Town and port on the east coast of Puerto Rico, in the West Indies, 48 km/30 mi southeast of San Juan; population (2000 est) 20,700. Humacao lies on the Humacao River in the foothills of the Sierra de Cayey, 8 km/5 mi from its port, Playa de Humacao. The town, which was founded in 1793, has light industry, including manufacture of textiles, plastic products, and cigars, and castor oil extraction. The surrounding area produces coffee, sugar cane, rice, and tobacco. Tourism is also now a major industry. Humaco has a regional college, founded in 1962, of the University of Puerto Rico.
